The book obviously is a classic, but I must say that I struggled quite a bit in reading it and finally decided to abandon it half-way through. It was written in 1850, when adultery was a taboo, and one can but admire the author for challenging this subject. However, I personally didn't like the puritan setting and some of the characters very much.
(BTW: The book was made into a film by Roland Joffé in 1995 starring Robert Duvall and Demi Moore.)

I'll send it off to nikel27 today and hope she enjoys it...!

TBR. Got this book from Yet Another English Bookbox.
2004 January 18. One of the things I like about classics is when they have an introduction that offers an interpretation of the book, even if in this case I did not agree with the analysis. The introduction claims that it is difficult to see what Nathaniel Hawthorne thought, because the opinion of the narrator, as present in the novel, is not consistent, and thus cannot definitely be associated with the author. To me, however, this abiguity means that Hawthorne was trying to find a balance between keeping the book morally acceptable to his contemporaries and pointing out the prevailing inconsistency in judging male and female adulterers. The same goes for the tendency to think that a person who is just suspected of doing some wrong is already guilty of some misconduct.
Another problem that I have is with the annotation of the text, which is scolarly up to the point where it starts detracting from the novel as a work of art. A way around that might be to first read the introduction and the notes at the end, and then the novel.
This all sounds rather negative, but that may be because the book deals with a negative subject. I am glad I read this book.
Released in Buecherfressers English Bookbox.

I have just attended a workshop at university dealing with religious freedom and the puritan way of live that got even more extreme than the prosecution had been in England. I had seen the movie before, maybe thats because it was easier to me to follow the story when it got a bit long, but classical books have this kind of writing that comes from the time when they were written.
I would judge it as a good book and enjoyed reading it after all, but it is a very special subject the book deals with.

I will take it with me to Denmark to give it to some friends.
