Charlotte Brontë characterized the eponymous heroine of her 1847 novel as being "as poor and plain as myself." Presenting a heroine with neither great beauty nor entrancing charm was an unprecendented maneuver, but Brontë's instincts proved correct, for readers of her era and ever after have taken Jane Eyre into their hearts. The author drew upon her own experience to depict Jane's struggles at Lowood, an oppressive boarding school, and her troubled career as a governess. Unlike Jane, Brontë had the advantage of a warm family circle that shared and encouraged her literary pursuits. She found immediate success with this saga of an orphan girl forced to make her way alone in the world, from Lowood School to Thornfield, the estate of the majestically moody Mr. Rochester, and beyond. Unabridged republication of a standard edition.

I read this a while back. I remember liking it fairly well. Just was a slow read for me. I'm not going to reread it though, so I'm letting it go free.

I'm making this into a bookray!
Rules:
*Remember to journal the book when you get it so we know it's arrived safe and sound, then journal again when you've finished reading it.
*Ship to the person after you on this list. I'm trying to work it out according to shipping preference and location on list preference, so let me know if something doesn't work.

*Try not to keep the book for more than a month or so. If you need to keep over a little, that's fine too.
*Whoever is last on the list should RABCK or something similar with this when they're done.

Sending to tyrone-slothrop in Portugal! It's a wonderful classic, and I'm glad to have read it again. I think it's an interesting novel to analyze in terms of feminist critical theory, but on another level, to explore the sense of place. Jane Eyre has four distinct locals in her travels and there are compelling ways to approach the mood and status in each location.

Anyway, enjoy!

I sent it to Bubble on Thursday. Glad to see he already received it.

On the whole I think it's a pretty readable book, but I must also say I felt it hasn't aged well... I believe it lacks the passion and unconventionality of Emily's Wuthering Heights, for example.
There's a lot to be said for it on the gounds of feminism, and some passages are still striking and fresh, but I much rather enjoy Jane Austen (Mansfield Park is the classic "poor little orphan girl" story), with her marvellous wit, or the wisdom and social realism (but still poetical) of George Elliot, just to name women writers from the 18th century.

But a good book, a 7 or 8 in my scale :)

Thanks a lot Firrantello!!!!!

Very good book, i have just finished this, sorry to have taken a little longer with it but it is quite thick (!) and im busy studying. I had a period of not being able to sleep and read most of it then. Well, down to the details, this is a wonderful book, a beautiful story and has a lovely ending (no peeking! you really mustn't) and i enjoyed reading it very much. I found it much easier-going than Emily's Wuthering Heights. Next i think i need to read some Jane Austen! I have pm'd literarylover for address and will send soon.

Hey! I finally finished! Sorry for de long delay, I kept putting it off and looking at it on my bedside table put could never get to finishing.

I enjoyed the book but I really couldn't understand how Jane could fall in love with Mr. Rochester. He wasn't particularly nice or doting (until they were to be married) and even they he obviously wasn't the most honest guy! She seemed like she must have had low self esteem if she was going to settle for that shmoe. Luckily she didn't hook up with her cousin...gross. I was happy she finally found some kindred spirits in her cousins.

Anyway, this was an entertaining book. Thanks Firantello for sharing! I will send it back to you this week.

I loved this book. It was full of drama and totally addictive. It was also believable, something books often aren't. I can totally understand why this is a classic.

Jane Eyre is certainly a woman to be admired, she has standards and sticks to them and doesn't treat others as she has been treated (which is sadly quite common)

I did find this a little more emotiional than I was anticipating and now am going to read a more lighter read.
