A futuristic novel writen by one of Canada's most well known authors.

The narrator of Atwood''s riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake''s high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief.

Waiting to send out in "I love my country" RABCK exchange.

I've actually heard quite a lot about this book. When I was in highschool one of the parallel classes was reading this on their English lessons. As I had friends in this class I could often hear them complain about the book, because they had to read it, and it was all wierd. I've asked at least one of them afterwards if it was as bad as they made it sound. It wasn't, he said it was actually a good book even though it was somewhat wierd... the complaining had, as always just been complaining about having to do homework ;)

Thanks a lot, I do really look forward to read this book! :D

It was a long time waiting to be read, but a trip to Canada this summer prompted me to take the plunge. It was, as expected, a fascinating read. Sometimes, with reading matter, one needs a little nudge and I, for one, am grateful for it. Well deserving of praise.

It features many of the environmental issues of the day; global warming and the resultant abnormal weather phenomenon, flooding, drought, severe hurricanes etc, degradation of the environment caused by over-population and the needs to feed, house, clothe these extra mouths. These in truth however, only to serve to act as a backdrop to the central theme: our increasing over-reliance on science and a small number of all powerful and largely self-policed scientific entities to solve all of the world's problems. In particular this novel shines a light on the fields of cloning and genetic manipulation set against a background of increasing numbers of drug resistant viruses, so called super-bugs. The suggestion that as more diseases are cured more will need to be invented in an effort to control ever burgeoning population growth.

This is quite a dark book but not in the ways that you would expect. It is virtually devoid of violence and brutality but rather it reflects humanity warts and all. Jimmy is passive and shallow, even as the world is crumbling around him, is still obsessing about sex. It is easy not to care what happens to Jimmy yet obversely I found myself willing Snowman to succeed. Which all feels somewhat counter-intuitive when you realise that they are one and the same person.

In many respects this book is a cross between 'I am Human' and 'Frankenstein' with a touch of 'The Time Machine' thrown in for good measure or perhaps more accurately brought up to date. Overall I really enjoyed this book. It contains many of the Atwood trademarks, a certain poetry to her prose and deft use of language which never gets too technical. I look forward to reading further books in the trilogy.

Thank you for granting a wish

18 Feb 20 - Wow what a dark book. It feels so strange and yet so familiar at the same time and I think that’s what makes this book. For most of the book I wasn’t really sure what was going on, but it was very readable and had me turning pages. The look at how science can be used to create new creatures and virus’ that can benefit us as humans and with Coronavirus doing the rounds at the moment, it made this feel very current. I hadn’t realised it was part of a series, so I may have to keep an eye for the next one.

What an impressive book! But also very sombre, the more so because of the terrible effect of the corona virus worldwide at the moment!
