I joined this bookray because I loved the title and the original cover (not this one) caught my fancy, appealed to the very large part of weird in me. Unfortunately the covers were too far apart and it was imo a waste of time to read. Sorry for the bad press. Thanks for sharing. Contacting the next up. LOL

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This book is finally on its way to the USA!

I found it a hard one to become absorbed in and had to read it in bite-sized pieces. A little self-indulgent for my taste. Still, this is the first Israeli novel I've read and found the cultural commentary interesting.

Journal Entry 9 by wingerishkigalwing at Salt Lake City, Utah USA on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
Oh, I just realized I failed to journal when this arrived~I'm sorry! I'm guessing it came while my computer was down, and then I simply forgot I hadn't done so.

Sooooo....I, too, found myself reading this in short bits, never getting deeply into it. I found it extremely self-indulgent, auteristic, what my Dad would term the author's "excessive mental masturbation." Which was disappointing, as initially I was quite taken with the style.

I think I was continuously vacillating between liking and hating it. I enjoyed having a look inside a culture whose daily experience is so different from mine. Linguistics always fascinate me. And at times the humor had me chuckling out loud. But the protagonist was as self-indulgent as the author, and I didn't give a fig about him. And the graphic continual sodomizing of the girlfriend was~to me~ pointless. And definitely some of those times I would put the book aside.
Which, in retrospect, may have been the point: a Brechtian device.

I shall now pm authorauthor and send this on. Thanks for sharing.

Oops. I forgot to journal this one when it arrived. So sorry about that.

Now that I've read it, I have to say that I agree with the other journalers. It's a great title, but the title is wasted on this book. The Israeli setting was interesting, but the main character didn't appeal to me at all.
