A novel as quirky as the title would suggest.

An eighty-four year old marries a sexy thirty-six year old blonde tart with big tits, a gold digger from the Ukraine.

Shortlisted for the Orange Prize for fiction 2005.

At times wry humour and wit, very Russian.

After about halfway, it becomes very boring. Could anyone be this stupid?

Lacks the wit of Alexander McCall Smith, with a strong Russian flavour.

Towards the end, philosophical and sad. We learn not to be too judgmental. We forget at out peril, the horrors people in the Ukraine went through during WWII, what they had to do to survive, and what they are going through now under gangster capitalism imposed by the West, not allowed to develop their own third way. It is the destruction of their economy that makes women like Valentina prostitute herself in the West, drawn to what she believes is the glitter and gold of the West.

Marina Lewycka is herself an immigrant from the Ukraine.

The blurb on the book cover, as is too often the case, bears little resemblance to the novel.

Nowhere as good as her second novel Two Caravans.
