44 Scotland Street is the first book in the 44 Scotland Street series.
44 Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith is full of boorish Scots. You know the sort, you meet them at social functions, dressed in their kilts and they bore you to death talking about all things Scottish. If that was not bad enough, the book drones on and on about Scottish painters and writers no one outside of Scotland has ever heard of, and probably would not want to ever hear of.
But you need to persevere, as then you can graduate to the next book in the series, Love Over Scotland.
Love Over Scotland is an entirely different kettle of fish. It is witty, amusing, and at times very funny, but unfortunately it is necessary to read 44 Scotland Street to get to know the characters, but at least one can do so knowing there is something to look forward to.
