I recently purchased this title as part of my project to read all Transita's publications! I have yet to read, but as I plan to release all Transita books I have purchased as Bookrays, marking as AVL so that other Transita fans will maybe let me know now of their interest in reading this title.

Synopsis
When Eleanor Morrissey leaves Kildoran on a dark September night in 1930, nobody is sorry to see her go and nobody expects to see her return. As far as the villagers are concerned, the Morrisseys have been shamed out of town forever. Fifty years later, some visitors attend the funeral of the convent's Mother Superior. When the funeral is over, one woman stays behind. Until she is free to leave again, she must struggle to understand her legacy - a legacy of voices. Threatening, angry, accusing voices that only she can hear, because they are soft voices - whispering.
From the Publisher
Adrienne Dines has been referred to in her native Ireland as ‘the new Maeve Binchy’. Soft Voices Whispering is her third novel in just over a year.

Journal Entry 2 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Thursday, June 21, 2007
I like the title of this novel very much; having finished reading it seems so apt!
Characters and setting that I quickly became immersed in. Another novel intertwining two time frames. I have read a few using this theme successfully recently.
The deep secrets of 1930’s Kildoran in Ireland are rising to the fore in the 1980’s when memories are ignited. Some of the characters have been wrestling with these painful repressed secrets from their pasts for fifty years. The secrets are harrowing and tragic, deeply affecting those involved. The story draws you in and you feel you know the characters. It is a happy relief when the present catches up with the past, demons are exorcised and life can at last move on.

I will certainly be reading more of this author. I wonder if this may actually be her first novel, though not published first. I am making this assumption because the dedication is ‘First story for a first son’. Certainly her first three books have been published very quickly all within two years, one suspects in recognition of the standard of writing of this new author.

To try and avoid them all ending up with one person, I will stagger the starting dates. Please try and read and pass on within less than a month, thankyou.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

RELEASE NOTES:

En route to the UK on the first leg of its travels.

I must re-word my PM's to say I will only send if I hear from a Bookcrosser and not if I don't!! So this title arrived as a complete surprise because my PM never arrived.

Journal Entry 5 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 8, 2007
Thank you Linda, a surprise, but very welcome.

Journal Entry 6 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Thursday, September 6, 2007
I really enjoyed this book. Adrienne Dines has built a totally credible world in Kildoran, and peopled it with strong, warm characters. It breathes Community, and shows a storyteller of great strength who I will read again, if I get the chance. Thank you, LindyLouMac, this Transita novel touches the spot!

Posted to Herrgirl today. Midlifecrisis asked to be moved down the list.

Journal Entry 7 by herrgirl from Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Saturday, September 8, 2007
Arrived safely this morning, thanks cross-patch for sending it on. Next on my list after my current read. I've read The Jigsaw Maker by the same author, so have high hopes for this one.

Journal Entry 8 by herrgirl from Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Thursday, September 13, 2007
This was an absorbing and enjoyable read which drew me in from the first page and held me right until the end. Very much in the Maeve Binchy style, in that the setting is a small Irish village with a colourful cast of characters, everyone knowing everyone else's business. Or do they? Secrets from fifty years ago are gradually revealed, and although the reader often knows the truth before the character, it is fascinating to watch them as they move towards it (rather as in another of Adrienne Dines' books, The Jigsaw Maker).

Thanks for sharing another great Transita book, LindyLouMac.

I have PM'd birmingham-rose and will send it on when I hear from her.

Update: posted 2nd class on 17/9/07

Journal Entry 9 by birmingham-rose from Burntwood, Staffordshire United Kingdom on Thursday, September 20, 2007
Received in the mail this morning. I'm a little behind with my bookrings at the moment and have 1 ahead of this (Paradise Fields - Katie Fford) but I will try not to hold it up too long.

Journal Entry 10 by birmingham-rose from Burntwood, Staffordshire United Kingdom on Monday, October 1, 2007
Overall enjoyable. I enjoyed the 'timelines' and like LindyLouMac, have read a few other books with these in recently.
The characters were believable and the story flowed well.

I've PM'd Annodyne for an address, will send it on as soon as I hear back.

Journal Entry 11 by Annodyne from Sale, Cheshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 10, 2007
Hurrah! After several days without any post at all, the arrival of this book is very welcome. Hope to be making a start early next week.

Journal Entry 12 by Annodyne from Sale, Cheshire United Kingdom on Saturday, October 20, 2007
I'm glad to say that I really enjoyed this book. It tells what is essentially a very sad story, but while mindful of uncovering the huge burdens that many secretly carry all their lives, Adrienne Dines lightens the tone with warmth and compassion for her all too-human characters.

Comparisons with Maeve Binchy will be inevitable, and they certainly share the same Irish charm and easy flowing style.

I look forward to reading more from this author!

I have Cassiopaea's address, and hope to be posting it on to her early next week.

In Soft Voices Whispering the author uses the strategy of juxtaposing two stories, which, eventually coincide and answer some long unanswered questions. I found the beginning a little confusing but eventually the narrative became clearer and the final resolution was well done. Adrienne Dines has been hailed as the new Maeve Binchy. I don’t dislike Binchy, but I’m not a fan either, but I feel that Dines has the potential to grow into a writer of more depth and substance given the right material and of course her choice of direction. It will be interesting to watch her in the future.

Received today - thank you very much.

Journal Entry 18 by Midlifecrisis from St. Austell, Cornwall United Kingdom on Saturday, November 17, 2007
Far fetched, romantic tosh - butI LOVED it. The characters were beautifully drawn and the dialogue felt authentic, so I heard the Irish accents as I read. Real escapism, so by the time I finished it this morning I was actually there in Kildoran with Pius et al. Man thanks for the chance to read this. I will keep it moving asap.

Journal Entry 19 by Midlifecrisis from St. Austell, Cornwall United Kingdom on Monday, November 19, 2007

Arrived safely today 8-))

Journal Entry 25 by iwanttobeinital from Belvedere Marittimo, Calabria Italy on Friday, July 18, 2008
Well I really enjoyed this book! Although when I first started reading and discovered it was about nuns and convents and the like my heart sank - but there was nothing to fear 8-))
Less flowery than Maeve Binchy in my mind and very convincing characters.
I'll get this off to Melamura asap.
Many thanks for sharing LindyLouMac - this one has restored my faith in the Transita titles.

Journal Entry 26 by Melamura from Montefiascone, Lazio Italy on Thursday, August 7, 2008
book safely received from iwanttobeinitaly, thankyou. it was waiting for me on my return from short holiday in the UK.

Journal Entry 27 by Melamura from Montefiascone, Lazio Italy on Sunday, August 24, 2008
I agree with other reviewers in that this was by far the best Transita title I have read. Was beginning to give up hope in their books but this has changed my mind. I also agree that it is like Maeve Binchy in style but slightly better. You really believe in the characters and care what happens to them in the end. a very enjoyable book which will be on its way to Suffolk Barnowl soon.

Journal Entry 28 by Suffolk-Barnowl from Eye, Suffolk United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Just returned from a holiday in Cornwall and found Soft Voices Whispering and Neptunes Daughter waiting for me. Thankyou Melamura for posting them to me

Journal Entry 30 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, December 31, 2008
This did arrive a while back, but due to family bereavement, have only just had a chance to register it. Have two before this one, so may be a wee while before I get to it.
8/1/09 One more bookring before I get to this one.
27/1/09 Just started this one.

Journal Entry 31 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 17, 2009
After a slow start and almost giving up on the book, I am so glad I continued with it. I enjoyed the present/past aspect of the writing and the way it all tied together. Sympathy with some of the characters was something you couldn't avoid. The title was very apt and well chosen given the subject matter. It was such a shame that such secrets took such a long time to come to light for those involved in the events of the past. I have the address for 'allbookedup'.
