This is the ultimate reading experience as a child. You cry, you laugh and you fall in love with the characters - well at least Jonathan! Just read it for the first time for my daughter. Luckily she loved everthing about the book, apart from her mother crying whilst reading.

You may wonder now - this is a roundabout with our favourite books, and I picked a children's book?

A couple of reasons for that:
First of all - it is a brilliant book, that covers a very important and difficult theme.
Secondly - it is a book that is well known in Scandinavia, but not that much in other countries. Thus this is a brilliant opportunity to get this gem of a book more readers.
Thirdly - hopefully none of you have read the book before.
And last - it is one of my favourite books! (I read it on average once a year...)

The Brothers Lionheart is about two young brothers, the elder Jonathan is brave and strong, whilst the younger Karl is weak and ill. Jonathan tells his younger brother stories from Nangiyala, the place you get to when you die. Then they both tragically die...

Astrid Lindgren is an author that is well known and respected, and she always treats children seriously. This book is one of the few childrens books (that I know of) that manages to write about the subject death with dignity. My own daughter used this books as comfort when her grandfather died.

I really hope you will enjoy the book, and that the story will stay in your heart.

arrived today thank you!
Excellent bok or a children's book. It went straight into the story grabbing them immediately and then onto adventure. Quite a good translation as well. I'm not sure that some UK 9 year olds would be able to cope with it but that seems to be a reflection of the times rather than the book. Cleverly explained the meaning of some of the harder words in the same paragraph they appeared in without stressing the explanation.
Also had a surprise twist at the end.
Thank you for sharing

Not a book I am familiar with either as a child or an adult. I will share reading it with my 10 year old niece.

A delightful book with beautiful illustrations. I enjoyed sharing it with my nieces (aged 5, 10 and 14). I will look for another copy when my grandsons are old enough to appreciate it.

Thank you for sharing the book with me.

A very enjoyable read which whisks you away back to a time when fairytales and fantasy could fire the young imagination. Although meant for children and the flow of the narrative is effected by translation, I found myself engrossed until the end. Truly enchanting, thank you!

What a great book! I'll have to buy it for myself (and my kids). Really enjoyed the magic of the story. Great kids' book, but also nice to read for adults. Thanks for giving me the chance to read a less known Astrid Lindgren book!

Just got this book today by post and am looking forward to re-reading it. I read it as a child or it was even read to me and I also watched the film more than once. I remember that I was always a little bit scared of the characters. I do not remember many details but I definitely loved the book. Will read it very quickly.

I finished this book in a day and it was great to read it again. No wonder Astrid Lindgren is one of the most favourite children´s authors. I will send the book on tomorrow.

I had really mixed feelings about this - I enjoyed the story a lot, but am not sure, ultimately, what the message really was. Or at least, I see the parts about kindness and bravery and loyalty, but found trying to unravel what it was saying about the afterlife perplexing. I'd be really curious to hear how children react to it, as it's such an unusual children's book.
On its way to Meg72 now.

This book broke my heart! I liked the theme of brotherly love, Jonathan and Karl´s adventures, the frightning dragon and all the fantasy, but the ending was just too much for me. In fact, I don´t think I would recommend this book to my young nieces; I think it is too dark...

I'm looking forward to reading it.
Update: I loved this book, although cried a bit. The story of brotherly love was beautiful. The attitude towards death was interesting and refreshing, but I'd recommend parents reading it first before reading to children.
