Should probably be under literature & fiction, but fantasy would work too.
Unabridged, 10 cds.

I've had an ARC of this book on my TBR stack for a couple of years and somehow never quite gotten around to reading it, so when I saw this second-hand, I thought I'd be more likely to listen to the audio.

One nice thing about having the book in both formats: I get to see how those
names are spelled. For the curious:

Igel
Béka
Onions
Ragno
Blomma
Zanzara
Kivi
Aniday
Speck
Luchóg
Chavisory
Smaolach

When Henry Day is seven years old, he runs away from home...and is stolen by changelings. Their leader takes his place, and the boy born as Henry Day becomes Aniday the changeling, a member of the tribe of magical beings living in the forest outside the town.

As the years pass, Henry the former changeling and Aniday the erstwhile boy tell their stories in alternating chapters. Their lives are very different, but their paths keep intersecting in strange ways.

I really enjoyed this book and I'll be passing it on to share with others.

Not that it matters, but the story seems to be set somewhere in western Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, based on references to Heinz Hall and Shadyside.

Journal Entry 4 by JudySlump612 from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Saturday, December 12, 2009
Hyphen8, I was the lucky person with fast enough reflexes to grab this book. Dr.Slump & I listened to it while driving from Minneapolis to Chicagoland and back for a Thanksgiving family gathering, and it certainly made the trip a lot faster. Both the narrators are quite good, and having two different voices for the two main characters added to the sense of conflict that they began to find themselves in.

So why didn't it get more stars? First, the cover illustration led me to expect something with the complexity and elegance of Sylvia Townsend Warner's Kingdoms of Elfin. Unfair, I know, but my disappointment lasted for the first two discs. Second, I felt let down by the ending, although I couldn't suggest with anything better. Finally, the hobgoblins' inconsistent attitude to the rest of the world bothered me. Their stated goal was to take the place of a human child and move into the human world, but we almost never see them working at that. What we do see is all the efforts they go to to escape detection or contact with that world.

Nonetheless, it was well balanced, with very interesting characters, and I enjoyed it a lot. And thank you, Hyphen8, for the spelling of names! Part of me always wondered about that.

I'll be releasing this with care, because it's too good just to disappear. So far there's one OBCZ where I've had an audiobook caught, so I'll wait to release it until we get there again, to give it the best chance of continuing its journey.

Placed in Indygo88's CD-only Audio Book Box

Journal Entry 6 by wingbookczukwing at Charleston, South Carolina USA on Saturday, August 6, 2011
My son plucked this from the bookbox for me because it was one of a few books not rubber-banded or touching rubberbands or copied (ie not original disks; I do not support pirated literature or music.) I have a horrible latex allergy (as in I stop breathing), and was frustrated that so many of the boxes has something that could kill me on them. Anyhow, he wiped the box down and gave it to me to check over. I look forward to listening to it at some point in the future -- I'm doing an audio re-read of the Wheel of Time series and am finishing book 5 (out of 13, with the 14th due out in 2012.)

A double story -- the changeling become human child vs the human child become changeling. But the unanswered question for me still is why fairies supposedly switch their children with human children? The cuckoo does it to foist off the raising of their own offspring and ensure their survival, but there's a fundamental flaw here if all the fairies were once human and are destined to be raised by human again. I never could get past that problem to immerse myself fully in the story.

But it does give new twists to the memories of past lives....

Going into bigjohnlefty,s audio box

Journal Entry 11 by KateKintail at Burke, Virginia USA on Wednesday, December 12, 2012
Taking out of BigJohnLefty's Audio Bookbox.

The back states "will appeal to fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and J.M. Barrie." To which I reply "that sounds like me!" I've always loved Yeats' faerie child poem, borrowed by this book for the title and concept. I look forward to giving it a go! Thanks!

Journal Entry 12 by KateKintail at Burke, Virginia USA on Sunday, June 19, 2022
This book wasn't what I was expecting (I was expecting the faerie version of stolen child, rather than this version of hobgoblin changelings), but I liked the two different points of view--the stolen child and the one who took his place. It was great world-building and culture-building, and seeing what each went through and dealt with personally was interesting and fascinating to me. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did!

Picked this up at today's meet-up. I basically swapped one of the audiobooks I brought for the two that KateKintail brought. After looking more closely at this, I am unlikely to read it, but I know someone I can offer it to.
