FROM THE PUBLISHER
Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the warden makes the boys "build character" by spending all day, every day, digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realize there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.

Just finished this yesterday. I really enjoyed reading it, finally! It was very similar to the movie, which is rare. But it was a nice, quick read.

This is on its way to wyldeanthem, mailed on 10/31.

Journal Entry 6 by wyldanthem from Lancaster, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, November 7, 2005
Received yesterday and started reading today — so far, so good! Thanks to timollie, for sending it on, and to efs300 for offering this 'ring!

Journal Entry 7 by wyldanthem from Lancaster, Pennsylvania USA on Wednesday, November 9, 2005
Well that was a quick read!

I haven't seen the movie (didn't realize one was made, actually), but I'd heard enough great things about this book to make me curious. And I'm glad, because it turned out to be a very fun, light read.

From the beginning Stanley Yelnats' name made me smile, and every time he cursed his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather I laughed out loud. What really pulled me in, though, was that Louis Sachar's scenery was just as unique and interesting as his characters. I found myself really interested in the town that once thrived on the now dried-up lake, how the lake dried up to begin with, and what happened to the town's inhabitants — particularly Kissin' Kate and Sam the onion man.

Camp Green Lake is an interesting place. I'm glad I was given the opporunity to visit, though I can't say I'd want to stay there. :)

EDIT:
As of earlier this week, Holes is on its way to dianemdo in New Jersey.

Journal Entry 11 by Aisling78 from Essex, Massachusetts USA on Monday, February 20, 2006
Yay! This arrived Saturday (2 days ago), but I was away for the weekend & wasn't able to get online until now to journal that it got here. I can't wait to begin -- I just finished another book Friday & hadn't picked up another yet, so this came just in time!

Journal Entry 12 by Aisling78 from Essex, Massachusetts USA on Monday, February 27, 2006
Wow. I started reading this book on my lunch break at work -- a measly half hour. Cam home, settled in on the couch after supper, and refused to put it down until I was done (thankfully I read fairly quickly, so I wasn't too bleary-eyed the next day at work!).

This was such a unique story. I loved the plot, and was fascinated by the characters (especially Stanley and Zero). The back-stories about Stanley's great, great grandfather and how his actions put a curse on his descendants, and the relationship between Kissin' Kate and Sam the Onion Man, were just as interesting as the events that were taking place in the present-time.
I vaguely remember the promos for this movie, and am considering renting it this weekend to compare the movie version to the book itself.

Thank you so much, efs300, for sharing this book with us! I've e-mailed the next bookcrosser in line, mstumnus, and will send it off to Florida once I have an address.

"Holes" has (finally) been mailed! 6-24-06.
It's on it's way to mstumnus in Orange Park, FL.

Journal Entry 14 by Aisling78 from Essex, Massachusetts USA on Sunday, July 23, 2006
This book is having quite the time trying to get to the next bookcrosser. It showed up in my mailbox again yesterday, with a stamped label stating: "Attempted -- Not Known. Orange Park, FL 32073"

ACK! I PMed MsTumnus, begging her to send me her address one more time, so hopefully this book can resume it's journey again very soon.

Journal Entry 15 by colebear from Jacksonville, Florida USA on Sunday, December 17, 2006
I caught this book from mstumnus's bookshelf last night. I was over with some friends and she admitted to me that she had never journaled this book and since she doesn't have internet access she didn't know how to move it along. I brought it home so I could journal it for her and to help her move it along. I've PMed the next person and will ship it off as soon as I get an address.

On mstumnus's behalf, I humbly appologize for holding the ring up. mstumnus said she vastly enjoyed the book, as did her husband.

Got in the mail days ago. Sorry to be so long journaling! This was
a fun, easy, entertaining read. Also a message that wasn't too sugary sweet...maybe a little "Splooshy!"

I was lucky enough to get a couple of hours to myself today and picked this up. I was very quickly drawn into the story and managed to get it finished already.

I loved the story and the characters, especially Stanley and Zero. It's a really unqiue story and I'll be keeping my eye out for the film on TV.

Weebly has already read the book, so I've contacted chas04 and will post on as soon as I have an address. Thanks efs300 for sending this out.

I find 'Holes' to be:
sometimes boring
sometimes hilarious
sometimes simple
sometimes funny
sometimes unrealistic...

but all in all, it's a good read.

Will mail the book to AnnieMacFan as soon as I get her address.

Journal Entry 24 by AnnieMacFan from Tacoma, Washington USA on Thursday, June 7, 2007
Just received this book. Looking forward to reading it right away. Thanks for the opportunity criminologeek and efs300.

Holes arrived back home several days ago after its trip around the world. We were on vacation at Disney World at the time, see pic. I would like to thanks everyone that read this book and kept the bookring going. It is great to get a bookring book back home. This is going on reserve and in the fall when my wife goes back to her teaching job she is going to hopefully get some of her colleagues interested in bookcrossing using this book.
