Interesting chap, Hazlitt. Got himself into a but of a mess with a young girl he was obsessed with.
I'l no doubt dip in and out of this.

Arrived in my NSSSS parcel. This was a good pick as I really like books like this. Thank you!
I got this book at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Thanks!
I've been attempting to read these essays, and indeed did read The Fight and The Indian Jugglers in the full. I almost managed to finish On the Spirit of Monarchy, but then gave up.
Hazlitt was indeed an interesting chap (see Wikipedia), but it seems painfully obvious that at some point he must have been paid by the word. He repeats himself constantly, and I tend to admire a more compact and elegant essay-writing style.
I did enjoy the setting of The Fight, but the description of the fight itself disgusted me to no end. I am indeed one of these faint and fussy ladies who can't abide a bout of good healthy English fun. Urgh.
An interesting little collection, and I sort of wish I had the patience to wade it though, but there are better essays in the world - I'll read those instead.
And the book continues on its travels!

Well, I found On the Pleasure of Hating in my bookshelf again! Apparently Erinne grabbed it before I could release it, and eventually he even read the book through. Good for him - I never made it past the third essay. Erinne says he enjoyed the pugilism stuff, but the rest of it was a bit dull.
Now I'll see if I can release this book for real!
