The Monk in the Garden : The Lost and Found Genius of Gregor Mendel

A nice biography of Mendel, usually regarded as the father of modern genetics. Little detail is actually known of his life, but the author has done a good job of putting together a compelling biography from the material she unearthed. The question of whether Mendel actually 'cheated' in his experiments is faced discretely but directly. Having read this, I will be tempted to see if I can visit Mendel's garden, still in the monestary in Brno, Czech Republic.

This appeared in my mailbox today, to my great pleasure. It is the first bookcrossing book that I've caught (mailed to me by Charomyces)!! And just in time, too. Just last week a friend was bemoaning the fact that her student didn't even know about Mendel's crinkly peas. I remember crinkly peas vaguely, but I could use a Mendelian refresher. Thanks, Charomyces.
