I got this softcover at a local Newbury Comics store. It's a historical fantasy is set in fifteenth-century West Africa, in which Malika fights to reunite her divided kingdom while fending off attacks from inside - and from across the ocean. The authors' notes reveal that the fictional provinces were inspired by actual African kingdoms in what are now Nigeria, Benin, and Cameroon. There are mystical, magical elements as well as realistic battles, politics, and family strife.
