"On an autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives at a grand house in Amsterdam to begin her new life as the wife of wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt. Though curiously distant, he presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations ring eerily true.

As Nella uncovers the secrets of her new household she realizes the escalating dangers they face. The miniaturist seems to hold their fate in her hands – but does she plan to save or destroy them?"

This is going to be my pick for the 2016 Favourites Roundabout!

I was really anxious these days waiting for the book to arrive and wondering which it might be. Opening the envelope my heart dropped beacuse as it turns out I have already read it.

I have to admit that this book has been one of the most dissapointing reads of the past year for me. At first I was really excited to read it because I had heard so many good things about it and the story seemed really interesting. And so it was - at the beginning. The author builts up an intriguing mystery and I wanted to know how the plot would unfold but I found the writing really disturbing. I felt like I was reading stage directions for a play or something. I had the feeling that Burton tried to keep me at a distance for some reason. The narration didn't allow me to get close neither to the main characters nor to what they were going through. I kept on reading, profoundly upset, in hope for an ending and some sort of redemption. And then, I realised that I read 400 pages of a non convincing narrative for a conclusion that never came. Such a pity.

Slightly worried when I saw another parcel arrive as I'm growing a backlog. However this is the second book in the favourites roundabout so it can wait a little.

What another great book for the roundabout. This book successfully places you into a different time and location. You are transported into 17th century Amsterdam society and get swept away with the mystery and intrigue of Petronella's challenging marriage and new family with their secrets and lies.

The actual role of the miniaturist in the story confused me, as she seemed to be something of a by-line and I was disappointed she didn't play a more prominent role in the story. I think my overall impression of the story was that it was very bleak and when I reached the last page I felt quite melancholy. It seemed that every page was filled with depressing misery with not one chapter to lift me out of the grim narrative. I’m not sure how Petronella's relationship with her husband was sufficient for their bond to develop when they hadn't been together throughout the story. If it had had some lighter, even romantic moments, I would have definitely enjoyed it more. But that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it.

Received AOK - I've heard some good things about this book, so am looking forward to giving it a go.

I find it strangely sad when I just can't get into a book - I pride myself in loving a huge range of different authors, genres and stories, but every so often I just pick something up that doesn't suit my mood. Sadly, this was one of those books.

The writing was quite good and very lyrical, but after about 70 pages, I found myself really not bothered about finding out what happened next, I'd made a couple of guesses about things, but the book couldn't hold my interest enough to see if I'd guessed right.

A shame, because I honestly think if I'd picked it up at a different time of my life, I might well of enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this book. Probably wouldn't have picked it up personally so glad to have had it 'given' to me to read.
Without going into too much, it was well written and did indeed keep my interest. I wondered about the accuracy of the depiction of the time. I like that it touched on race, sexuality, greed, wealth, class etc.
But, I just didn't get the whole miniaturist thing. What was that about? Why was she there? What is the relevance? I felt like it was a side line to the actual story. Initially I thought it was going somewhere and then it didn't...
All in all, worth reading.

The book is safely with me! I've heard a lot about this title, very curious now

ETA:
What can I say? I'm not a fan of historical fiction. I've been to the Netherlands not long ago, so it was interesting to see the action taking place in the familiar environment, but it didn't help me to enjoy the book. I couldn't relate to the main character at all.
Hope next reader will enjoy the book more

I really enjoyed the first 100 pages or so of this book and was looking forward to where it was going. Unfortunately it went everywhere and tried to be too many things and the role of the miniaturist at the end I found very unsatisfactory. Will be sending this off to Icila in the next few days

I picked this up at the Ipswich unconvention. I’d heard good things about this book and enjoyed it, though like others I would have liked it to have had lighter moments and for the story to be less bleak. I thought the dolls house, it’s maker and it’s inhabitants would have had a stronger part in reflecting the lives of the main characters so was a little disappointed in that respect but the book was well written and I felt the historical setting was well described.
Now that I’ve read the book I can watch the tv adaptation that I recorded some time ago.
