Major Pettigrew's Last Stand: A Novel (Random House Reader's Circle)
2 journalers for this copy...
This was a delightful book about finding friendship, love and even passion later on in life. Major Pettigrew, a retired Englishmas, is very old-fashioned and needs to learn to navigate the turbulent waters of his feelings for Mrs. Ali, a shopkeeper in the town where he lives.
The story addresses many subjects, including love, friendship, family and prejudice.
The writing was excellent: A few quotes - "his eyebrows stretching like two rabbits getting up from a nap." "The Major watched him struggle like a fly with one leg in a cobweb." "He awoke with a feeling that today was to be low point of his world, an Antarctic of the spirit."

I read this for my book discussion group. Everyone loved it! I tried making it a Ring - but no interest, so am sending it along as a RABCK. Molly, I hope you will Ray it forward after reading and journaling it.
Wow! What a nice surprise to come home to. I just signed as interested in this maybe a week ago and did not expect to see it so soon. I really appreciate the opportunity to read it as I've heard good things on it. Many thanks valpete, for sending it along. Yes, I will Ray it Forward once I've read it.

Edited April 15th, 2011: I'm up at a retreat center with my book club for our annual Spring Fling and I no more than reclined in front of the fireplace ready to crack this book when another club member mentioned that she was supposed to be reading this one with her other group. Welllllll........since I have no less than 546 book in my TBR I graciously handed it over for her to read and return to me. Janelle has it. She is completely disinterested in BookCrossing so there'll be no entry from her but I'll keep you posted upon it's return. I will then attempt to read once more :^D
Now: October 26th, 2011: This little gem has been returned from Janelle who enjoyed it and since then has gone on to Deb who "really liked" it. Neither of them active BookCrossers. I'm up next then I'll Ray it on to someone over the Holidays as I'm in a few partner drawings for the giving season!
