Filthy Rich

Was in the used book store over the weekend looking for some VERY light reading and happened across this. From the back cover:
"Marcy Mallowitz has just been dumped -- big time! When she incorrectly answers her orthodontist boyfriend's $1.75 million lifeline question on the top-rated television quiz show "So you Want to be Filthy Rich!", he ends their preengagement in front of twenty million people.
Thrust reluctantly into the national spotlight, America's newest sweetheart is now being courted by Oprah and hounded by paparazzi. And soon everyone -- EVERYONE -- knows her name, if only as the punchline to a Letterman Top Ten list. Wise, sparkling, and funny, Filthy Rich is a hilarious exploration of instant celebrity, as well as a delightful romp through one woman's startlingly and unexpectedly public life".
Yes, it's chick lit. But it sounded like just the light, borderline mindless read I need this week. We'll see...

Finished this tonight, and wasn't quite sure what to say about it. It was fun, light, a no-brainer read, which is exactly what I was looking for after some recent heavier fare. I did some browsing to see what other bookcrossers thought of this and found iamsylviaplath from Oregon expressed my feelings the best:
"It's like beer for your brain!...it is full of empty calories, you go through it fast, but you love it anyway! :) very cheeky fiction, but a fun read :)"
countedx58 expressed interest, so this goes in the stack for next month's meetup.

Got this from fellow BookCrosser djf1968 at this evening's TriValley BookCrossing dinner. Thanks! :)
This was a cute, entertaining book in the tradition of Bridget Jones's Diary. Marcy, who acts as her boyfriend Neil's "lifeline" on a "So You Want to Be a Millionaire" type of game show, is dumped on national television by Neil for giving him the wrong answer. The rest of the book is what happens to her in the aftermath.
Released to fellow BookCrosser HereBeDragons at this evening's first anniversary meetup dinner.
This looks like a lot of fun; can't wait to read it when I'm in the mood for some laughs. Thanks, Countedx58! :-)
Hee! This was a fun book, and a very fast read. I read it in just a few hours on Labor Day. It's chick lit, told by Marcy, a young woman who has been asked by her boyfriend to be his "lifeline" on a television game show (similar to "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"). When she gives the wrong answer, he dumps her on the spot (yes, while the cameras are still rolling) - and he's not very nice about it. Afterward, Marcy finds herself at the center of a media feeding-frenzy, as dozens of talk shows want her to make appearances, and she has to decide whether or not she will embrace or run from this overnight celebrity that is being thrust upon her. Marcy is likeable and funny, and the book is filled with satirical references to television culture, past and present. There's a Brady Bunch theme that I appreciated (having been a big fan back in the day), and some of the names used are very clever. Lots of television celebrities make appearances, as well, including Oprah and Dr. Phil. I liked the sparse writing style, too - there are times that the plot skips ahead rapidly, but in telling the story cleverly in Marcy's "voice," we learn what we "missed" in a very few words. I did guess the ending, though. And not just the obvious bit that I think we were supposed to guess, but the bit that Marcy says surprised her and probably the reader as well. If you've read it, you'll know what I mean. Kingman's offer at the *very* end. Yeah, I saw that coming miles away. :D
Will bring this to the next meet-up, to pass along to the next reader.

Received at last night's meetup. Thanks!
This book was a lot of fun. Love those books you can read in a day or two :-)
Handed off to Calif-Booklover at tonight's holiday dinner.
Was handed this book at the Alameda BookCrossing Holiday gathering... like an extra gift! (Great party... nice people... and mellow times.) Thank you!
12/12 Have now finished reading "Filthy Rich", and it is, indeed, a kick. There was a bit of "Bridget Jones" and also "Sex in the City" in the storyline. I couldn't help cheering on Marcy, who retreated into shell-shocked isolation after her live-in beau dumped her publicly and savagely. This occurred because, as his "lifeline" for a TV quiz show, she didn't have the correct answer to the question that would have won him $1.75 million. Of course it all has a happy ending, with some fun (and hilarious) twists along the way. I read a fair amount of this on the train... it's a super light read, easy to put down and pick up again.
I'll be releasing the book at the December Meet-Up of the Alameda Co. BookCrossing group.

Oh good - a well-travelled, well-enjoyed light read!
Thanks, Calif-BookLover - and previous BC friends!

I enjoyed this more than I expected! Seemed like the author, more a serious journalist I think, had a lot of fun writing this. The sample game questions thrown in added to the entertainment.
Thanks to all my meet-up friends before me!
Sending this to CandyDarling in Finland - part of a book relay!
