Steinbeck is one of my all-time favourite authors, doing what so few twentieth-century writers do well, telling men's stories and giving them a voice they would otherwise not find for themselves.

Forager passed this on to me because he enjoyed it so much. I enjoyed reading about Danny, his friends and their adventures. However, although I know it's fiction, I felt sad about the amount of alcohol they drank and the damage it did.

Now back with me. I enjoyed reading this on holiday in the New Forest this year. Like Cannery Row this is a lighter-hearted collection of stories than Steinbeck's more famous novels.
