The Rum Diary: A Novel

This novel tells the fictional tale of a gonzo journalist's wild and often ridiculous experience in Puerto Rico, while working for an English-language newspaper.
Hunter S. Thompson gives us a vivid taste of his lifestyle, for better or for worse, and makes no apologies for it. You may hate many of the characters much of the time, but not because they are poorly written. It will be due to their authenticity and the brutal honesty of their humanity. You will truly get caught up in the narrator's love/hate relationship with Puerto Rico and its opportunist inhabitants.
Though it is wavering and random in direction, this novel certainly has a point to make and a life to live. The story is very realistic in its anecdotal narration, that draws the reader into looking desperately for a method to the madness, as the narrator himself does. This book is a definite favourite of mine.
