I enjoyed this short little book. I haven't seen the film yet but looking forward to doing so.
I thought the book was very moving. It makes you think about people who have to live in fear of society and of certain individuals for loving a person society doesn't consider 'suitable'.
Some parts of the book are harshly realistic; I've occasionally skipped half a page. I always do that when reading an Annie Proulx book...

Thanks Zazoetje, I have seen the movie but have never read the book. Hope it is as good or better as the movie
It is disapointing if you have seen the movie. Some things seem to have been changed for no reason. I'm glad I have read the book, but I will stick to the movie. The book misses much of the emotion that the movie has in my opinion
