Karen Joy Fowler draws the world of 19th century San Francisco with vivid accuracy. This is the story of a 40 year old unmarried woman in a world where this is a pitiful creature to be. She was raised by stern and unrelenting parents that made her feel of little worth. She continues to live and feel that way after they have both passed. Until she is meets with a notorious woman who sets in motion the events that lead her to reevaluate her life and self-worth.
I enjoyed this book but it did lack Fowler's usually sense of humor which I love so much.
I will pass this along at the monthly meet-up of the Trivalley Bookcrossers.
