'No sign of foul play,' says Dr Carr after the post-mortem on Agatha Dawson. The case is closed. But Lord Peter Wimsey is not satisfied ...With no clues to work on, he begins his own investigation. No clues, that is, until the sudden, senseless murder of Agatha's maid. What is going on in the mysterious Mrs Forrest's Mayfair flat? And can Wimsey catch a desperate murderer before he himself becomes one of the victims?

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed when I first read the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries, years ago, thinking them a shadow of Agatha Christie's better known novels.

However, on re-reading this, I was capitvated by the attention to detail and the dry wit that the author imbued the novel with, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I'm a much more attentive reader than my teenage self, which is both a blessing and a curse!

Whilst hardly being able to be a member of the gritty realism school of detection, Wimsey is no fool and is aware not only of his strange position in society - becoming an anachronism even then - but also of the issues of the day.

Some of the text does reflect the attitudes of the times - in particular relating to race - but deep down, I think that British society does still disapprove of mixed race relationships, and "bling" is probably today's equivalent of the purple hat and natty shoes - so have we really changed at all?

Found it in my mailbox this morning. I was in Chicago last week so not sure when it arrived. It was good timing. I finished the book I was reading at lunch today.

I have a book of collected short stories by Dorothy Sayers - I am now eager to read it.

I found the book very interesting. I found the teaming of Parker and Lord Peter Wimsey to be in the best of mystery novel tradition.

I enjoyed this particular book and will look forward to reading other books in the series.

I will mail as soon as I get the address.
