Oh I hated this book. It was so disappointing. I know that Stephen Donaldson has made an art of creating leading charaters who are physically or emotionally damaged and survive the ordeals placed before them through sheer determination. BUT Brew Axbrewder is pathetic. There is no way a character so flawed and wallowing in self-absorption and pity can elict anything approaching interest from the reader.

Maybe the problem is that both Donaldson and I are outside our normal genre, I must admit to having an interest in 'who-dunnits' only when they are backed by an excellent British cast. Perhaps Donaldson recognises his own limits and wrote these books originally under the pseudonym of Reed Stephens because he recognises the limits in himself and to enable him to distance himself from the work.

The only reason I picked this book up was the authors name, I certainly wouldn't have touched it otherwise. A wicked ploy by publishers to dupe loyal readers
