1999 Bantam paperback of the 1998 National Bestseller historical tale of battle at ancient Thermopylae in northern Greece, as 300 Spartan soldiers hold a pass against the mighty Persian army. I found this copy last week in the Lamson Little Free Library in Castro Valley.

I can let this go after I read:
1995 The Legend of Bagger Vance [read 2022]

Edit May 3, 2024: This was good, although I skimmed much of the non-action parts. The violence is extreme, and rather depressing. People are just built to organize for pointless violence that interrupts civilization all the time, no matter what. But this book conveys the horror of that, while giving a tremendous insight into the character of the warriors which makes it possible, and also a brilliant glimpse at the deeply historic events in a way that brings them all to life, just like our modern warriors and warmongers. Overall a very impressive work. It runs a bit long. I currently have this ranked at #4354 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
