A read a couple of books related to China lately (but all of them will remain in my permanent collection). Therefore I couldn't resist getting this book, even though there are so many books waiting on my shelf to be read. But it will probably be a while before I get around to read it.
This is the story of the family of a young Chinese woman, that lives in England with her father's lover after her father's dead. We follow her life over the course of a year, in which she gets pregnant and gives birth, and in which she is repeatedly visited by the ghost of her grandmother. The two narrators of the story are Jiao Mei, the Chinese girl, and Tie Mei, her grandmother.
To the sceptic this story might not be so much the account of a person, who is visited by a ghost, as the desperate attempt of a Chinese girl to use ghosts and supernatural scenarios to come to terms with her environment in a foreign land and with the events she encounters during her first year abroad.
In the end I did not like the story all that much, because to me the plot, despite the sometimes rich imagery (mostly related to gardening), went pretty much nowhere.
