This is absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. It also has the best first paragraph I've ever read. "When I was little I would think of ways to kill my daddy. I would figure out this or that way and run it down through my head until it got easy."

It is a coming of age tale of a young woman who has a tremendous brain, wit, and a tender heart. Her courage and fortitude are amazing.

Came in todays mail. I can't wait to finish what I'm now reading and get to this. My TBR pile is ever growing but this, by your journal entry, makes me want to start on it asap!!

Thanks so much - and sometimes the US Postal systems works quickly!! Then of course, you're only less than an hour south of me!

I agree, this was a wonderful book. From the first paragraph to the last it had me engrossed. My hope is for all "Foster" children to end up with such a special new mama as Ellen did.

(Ellen speaking) "I came a long way to get here but when you think about it real hard you will see that old Starletta came even farther. And all this time I thought I had the hardest row to hoe."

Thanks Secretariat for sharing this with me!

What a great book!!

How is it possible that from such a sad, heartbreaking story, comes such happiness and wit and courage? If you were to describe the plot of this book to someone, they would never believe that it was a ultimately a happy story, but it really is.

I love spunky little Ellen!

I agree with all of the above and more!
An absolutely incredible book that makes you value what you have in life!
Did you all know that it has been made into a movie? The movie is very well done and if you get a chance you should see it. I don't often recommend movies made from books but this one is worth it!
Thanks all!

I began reading this one nearly as soon as it fell out of
its packaging! It certainly is a captivating book!

Many thanks to tomsmama who very graciously offered me a
pick from her shelf. I picked a Virtuous Woman and she threw this one into the bargain. Most thoughtful!

I found this book sitting in the fresh peach bin at the grocery store in Hendersonville NC--what a surprise! It was a quick read--wonderful writing--wished it was longer. I live in San Francisco and am planning to "release" the book here, in the next few days. This was a wonderful experience.
