One of the "1001 books you must read before you die".
The love affair between Maurice Bendix and Sarah, flourishing in the turbulent times of the London Blitz, ends when she suddenly and without explanation breaks it off. After a chance meeting rekindles his love and jealousy two years later, Bendix hires a private detective to follow Sarah, and slowly his love for her turns into an obsession.
This book is so much more that the outline above may suggest, and being Graham Greene the writing is, of course, outstanding. A searingly honest and sad analysis of love, jealousy and hate. I was surprised at how vitriolic it was in parts. It poses many questions around belief, truth and love, without insulting the reader by offering any answers. Overall intelligent and thoughtful.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Hitchhiker!
Not sure if you're a Graham Greene fan or not, but if not I'm sure you can find somewhere to pass it on.

Thank you for this hitchhiker, I haven’t read Graham Greene for many years (school maybe?), so will be happy to read another.
Finally took this off my shelf to read when I needed to a small book to carry on public transport!
An excellent read, what started off to be the story of an affair quickly turned into a story of jealousy. Maurice was obsessed with Sarah and after their affair of five years was suddenly ended by herself, he used her husband Henry’s doubts to hire a private investigator to follow her for his own purposes.
The eventual production of Sarah’s journal changed the story somewhat when Maurice discovered Sarah’s search for faith after the supposed miracle of Maurice living after a bomb hit his house during the blitz.
A very well written story of a love triangle and a search for faith.
It was also interesting to see how Graham Greene focussed on the main character Maurice’s obsessive love and jealousy. Maurice was a writer like himself, did the author also experience an obsessive and jealous love in his life?

Caught at Redgum Cafe.
No doubt about it Greene is a great writer, however I find him hard work at times as he instigates so much to think about. This story is no exception; good writing, excellent storytelling encompassing serious philosophical issues.
