It's a new month... time for some new bug fixes!
While Matt is still working on harnessing the book data that we all have contributed to, and making it available for searches, he's also been rather busy fixing other things, and even adding some nifty little features. Read all about it in this Announcements forum post.Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World

This book is jam-packed with information about cod, cod and more cod. Whereas I found Kurlanksy's book "Salt" quite interesting, I'll admit I got a little bored with Cod. However, the history of cod and the problem of overfishing was quite eye-opening. I don't know that I can eat fish and chips again without feeling a little bit of guilt. (Hmm... but is it Atlantic Cod or some imposter fish?) It is interesting to see the impact cod had on various peoples and her nations. I learnt quite a bit about this ugly big-mouthed fish and the economic impact she has had on many communities.
There's myriad references to salt (cod) and the Basque people - is it any wonder that Kurlansky's other books are about salt and the Basque? Which came first, I wonder...
I'm marking this available for now, however, it's subject to release by me at any time.

What a treat it is to come home to a dinner prepared by the wife of fish and chips-which I did today...AND today I also was happy to find this book in the mailbox. I look forward to reading about this fish...up to now I've enjoyed it as a fish burger with side of slaw...

Left in studio where volunteers are seated for radio pledge.
I was working as a volunteer for my local NPR station during their pledge drive, the book was on a table in the volunteer room and so I brought it home to read it. Now that I have finished it I will actually be taking it back to the NPR station because the pledge drive is still going on and another volunteer will be interested to read the book and release it somewhere else into the wild! We get volunteers from all over Central Virginia for these pledge drives, so there is no telling where Cod may end up next!
As for the book itself, well, I love fish n chips as much as the next guy and I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this book. I am a mostly fiction reader and have recently (within the last eight years) started reading more non-fiction. I really enjoyed Cod. It gave the non-fish industry person an interesting insight into another world, one which I never imagined I could appreciate. Thank you, Mr. Kurlansky, for sharing your research and knowledge.

Very interesting. More interesting than I ever would have thought cod could be :)

This book will most likely be released somewhere in County Clare during my upcoming trip to Ireland. Go, book!
Hrm. I dropped this off in Innis, County Clare, Ireland on Thanksgiving, don't know why it seems to have disappeared there.
