Re-tellings of fairy tales are beginning to become a trope all of their own. It takes real skill to be able to turn something so dear and familiar and make it into something original, fresh and relevant. Even masters of the genre such as Marina Hyde and Angela Carter don't always get it right.
So I guess the above is a preamble to saying that this adaptation of the Beauty and the Beast tale generally works well, but it is a little uneven and the author makes the odd mis-step. Still better than Disney, however!
