On Step Day, plans appear on the internet for a tool to allow people to step between an unknown number of parallel Earths. Joshua, who doesn't suffer the nausea experienced by others on stepping, rescues the children who are lost on Step Day and against his wishes becomes known as an expert. When he meets Lobsang, a Tibetan who has reincarnated as a supercomputer, he is persuaded to go on a mission with him. Having enjoyed books by both Pratchett and Baxter in the past, I was very keen to read this although intrigued to see how their styles would work together, and I can definitely see bits of each in this blend. The Long Earth is a fascinating concept but the story is a bit disjointed at the beginning. Stick with it, it gets better towards the end.

Yeey, it arrived!! It's been a while since a wishlist book made its way to my doorstep, so I'm all excited and bouncy. ;-)
I got to know Terry Pratchett through the Discworld series and I am very curious about his other stuff. So far I haven't been disappointed yet. I hope 'The Long Earth' lives up to its expectations.
Thanks for sending it my way, ApoliniaX (and for the extra BCstickers) and thanks for registering it, greenbadger. I'm not the fastest of readers (basically there isn't enough time in the world), but I will get to it and then the book can travel onward!

Ok, the book didn't have to wait all that long before I got to it! I'm very happy that I tried it and I am curious abouth the next part the Long War. But I was let down a little bit somewhere halfway through the book. It lost a lot of its momentum in the endless stepping from world to world and the amusing little things Joshua and Lobsang indulged in. However when nearing the end, the book picked up speed again and then some. I'm slighly pissed that it ended on such a bombshell and I don't have book two available to me. :D
Thanks for sharing it with me, Apoloniax and thanks for registering it in the first place greenbadger!
