This book is GREAT with a capital WOW! I really had a tough time putting it down, and have decided I must read it again before releasing it...
I haven't read a book in ages that so completely describes the stereotyping that one group of people can do when they don't understand another group, as well as the fears and fallacies that we instill on our children when we refuse to learn the truths about others.
This is a heartwarming story because a young boy decides to ignore everything he has ever heard about someone else and learn the truths for himself. Of course, his fears cause him to keep secrets from the others in his life who prefer to remain ignorant, until he is forced to involve others in the community who are open to the truth. Together they work to right the wrongs perpetrated by ignorance, and to show the misunderstood that they are loved, regardless of differences.
The wise teacher is kind enough to take his time with questions that must be very difficult and painful to answer, dispelling falsehoods and revealing colorful, intriguing and meaningful histories which can only teach acceptance and understanding. In the process, he opens himself to new and exciting lessons from his young friend, which give him insight into the new world he now inhabits, and provides him with much needed companionship and love so desparately lacking in his life.
Together, these two characters show that prejudice and ignorance can be dispelled and friendship and love can flourish.
