This was the May Book Grocer Book Club selection. Certainly something I wouldn't have come across otherwise which is a good thing. The insights on the world of competitive gymnastics are interesting if somewhat horrifying. Not sure if the plot doesn't meander a bit too much and the back cover blurb as bit misleading as I was waiting for the often-referenced murder to happen much earlier in the book and the whole plot to take a crime novel turn, which it doesn't. The author mentions at the end that it was originally a film script idea and it might actually work better on the screen than as a novel. An okay read.

Martina wants to be the best gymnast in the world, but so do all the other girls in her team, and all the other girls they are competing against. They are in Romania for a competition, and it is cold and snowing. Rachele is their coach and pushes them hard, and Alex is their Physio and touches them inappropriately. They are a family and it is the only life she knows. Angelika, is the star of the Romanian team, and she is vey good, and Carla is jealous of her. She goes missing on the last day of the competition, feelings are running high, and Martina, Carla and Nadia find her dead in the forest near the hotel. Not a bad read.

This is a confronting read. On the surface it is about the world of gymnastics, the harsh training, the body model, the focus and the pursuit of greatness. At a deeper level it is a narrative on a world in which adults fail to protect children and as a consequence cause lifelong damage. Well written, the writing is sublime, immersive and catapults the reader on to an emotional journey.
