Brilliantly written, Hitchcockian story.

Giving to han_cat to pass to The-Green-Man
Safely with me to pass onto the Green Man at the next York meetup. Good taste both of you, love Shirely Jackson!
To be given to GreenMan at the York Meetup on Tuesday .....
Passed to me, by han_cat, at the wonderful han_cat-organised Leeds Meetup last Saturday (which, ironically, shnedwards also attended)! Thanks, you two xx Having read a great Guardian article online about Shirley Jackson a while back, I look forward to reading this (albeit when my mental state is a little less 'fragile' than currently)...
This was utterly wonderful. Very dark - but, surprisingly, not in the way I anticipated. shnedwards is spot-on with 'Hitchcockian'. There are themes in here that I recognise from my own experience of my family's relationship to their local 'community', so this aspect ran deep for me. Jackson knew of what she wrote. There are dark currents of superstition, mental illness and abuse swirling around in the shadows too. But all wrapped up in a compulsively readable 'mystery'. And the closing chapters are deeply poignant - tragic and yet also quietly joyous and liberating. What a writer! I definitely want to seek out more by her...
(also - the cover art for this edition is fantastically disturbing and utterly appropriate!)

Released 4 yrs ago (6/25/2019 UTC) at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie OBCZ / Meetup Venue in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom
WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Planning to release it at this evening's 'Authors-With-Names-Beginning-With-The-Letter-S'-themed BC Meetup being held at The Brigantes in York from 7pm onwards... ('S' is for Shirley!)
An enjoyably spooky read, that could have gone with one of several endings, although I had a suspicion about the final twist. Very atmospheric and descriptive, you can visualise the house clearly at the end.
Back into the system

Journal Entry 13 by davidbreslin101 at York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 24, 2019
This is an astonishing piece of writing. It's a tale of murder, delusion and persecution which could easily have just been a drag, but the eccentric viewpoint of Mary Katherine (one of the few survivors of the Blackwood Poisoning) makes it something special. Sinister and sad, but oddly charming too.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Releasing tonight at the York Bookcrossing Meetup.
Really enjoyed this. Despite her strangeness I really found myself identifying with Merricat and wishing the world were a nicer place to live for people who are different.
To be released at next York bookcrossing meetup.
