Brian Keenan's account of being held in captivity in Beirut for four and a half years. Gripping, harrowing, wonderfully written.

"From this horror has come something wonderful"

Now this was an interesting book. Very difficult to read at times. I was more interesting in knowing what actually went on during captivity and so found some of the passage that dealt with his feeling after the event (at the beginning of the book) very difficult to get into. I nearly gave up after 50 pages but in the end I was very pleased I didn't.

A very interesting read. I found it difficult at times because it seemed like it would never end. I'm not sure if Keenan was trying to express that through his writing, but it came through nonetheless. No matter how much I read, I didn't seem to get very far and it was like treading water at times. I can't begin to imagine exactly what him or any of the other hostages went through, but this goes some way to helping.

I had looked at the title of this and assumed it was a crime book. I was so glad when Jo pointed it out to me and made me look at it properly. I am from Leeds (where the book was first registered) and may release it back to other friends form there when I meet up with them next month.

It took me a long time to face starting this book, In fact it was the 2007 Keep them Moving Challenge that finally prompted me to read it. I too found it difficult to get into at first and some passages I found so harrowing I had to stop reading, For me it was the descriptions of the transportations between the different places they were held, chained and taped up in tiny coffin like compartments under trucks suffocating for hours in dreadful heat, that was so awful and terrifying, The story was ultimately though an account of how the captives managed to retain their humanity despite years of inhumane treatment. I am glad I read it, as well as being harrowing, it was often comic and full of insight.
