I was initially a little disconcerted by the first-person narrative style of most of this book, because I had already read Pigs in Heaven (the sequel, though both books stand alone) which is completely in third-person. However, the first-person soon felt natural and the book is well-written with a very enjoyable and touching story.

Offered on CasualReader's bookrelay site (see the end of my profile for a link).

Received from Illinicheme as part of Author's First Novel bookrelay. Enjoyed The Poisonwood Bible so intrigued to try her earlier work.

"I spent the first half of my life avoiding motherhood & tires, and now I'm counting them as blessings?" Thus Taylor learns that some things are beyond our control, the power of serendipity, and how life's tentacles cannot be avoided indefinitely.

Hmm, i preferred Poisonwood Bible, and took a long time getting into this, infact i nearly threw in the towel a third of the way through. It did grow on me however, so glad i stuck it out. In fact it gets pretty emotional near the end so be prepared.

Will now cast about for a candidate to pass it on to.

Currently reading this. Picked it up yesterday afternoon, and really enjoying it.

I had an awful experience once, when on a bus that was bogged in Northern Vietnam which had an American woman on board who spoke (loudly and) at length about her favourite book - The poisonwood bible.

Well, I have had a strong loathing for this author ever since, and had not even picked up one of her books!

Feel bad about that now.

Starflwr5 mentioned recently that The poisonwood bible was her favourite book, and that she was currently reading another one of this author's books (not The Bean Tree though).
So, I might foist this one on her at the next meetup (next Tuesday evening).

Thank you.

I enjoyed this book. It is the third book of hers that I have read, all are set in very different environments. She has a very gentle way of getting into the heads of her characters.

I'm an italian tourist. I picked up the book in Hide Park (Sidney, Australia), approximatly at 11.00 p.m., above a park bench.
I placed it into my lagguage and I brought it to Rome (Italy). Now, I have to decide where I'll leave the book ....
