The Summer Book
8 journalers for this copy...
An elderly artist and her six-year-old granddaughter while away a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. Gradually, the two learn to adjust to each other's fears, whims and yearnings for independence, and a fierce yet understated love emerges, one that encompasses not only the summer inhabitants but the island itself, with its mossy rocks, windswept firs and unpredictable seas.

Sometimes, when I read a book I really enjoy, I get cross with myself for not having read it before. In this case, though, I think I read it at exactly the right time.
I liked this bit: "In between times, she played cards with her grandmother. They both cheated shamelessly, and their card-playing afternoons always ended in a quarrel. This had never happened before. Grandmother tried to recall her own rebellious periods in order to try and understand, but all she could remember was an unusually well-behaved little girl. Wise as she was, she realised that people can postpone their rebellious phases until they're eighty-five years old, and she decided to keep an eye on herself."
I'd like a nice copy of this to keep. I'd also like to attempt it in the original Swedish. This copy, though, will be on its way to crimson-tide in Australia soon.

A beautiful read about nature. It is the simple everyday happenings as experienced by a six year old girl when she spends a summer exploring and sharing her life with her elderly grandmother on an island in Finland. Making available by post for a wish list tag recipient and travelling across the Tasman Sea in the next few days.
Enjoy and happy reading :)

A sweet and very enjoyable read.
Love the conviction that a six-year-old can have, that God would make a storm just for her, because she was bored and asked for something exciting to happen :)

I really enjoyed reading this. Those who know me well will not be in the least bit surprised that my favourite bit was the last chapter describing the family getting the summer cabin all shipshape, ready for winter. I absolutely love fiction and non-fiction which is describing people getting stuff done like this. There's something very harmonious and purposeful about it. Yes, I know I'm strange. LOL.

Picked this up because we weren't allowed to leave any books at the Filmhouse OCBZ this month and I think I know someone who may want this. If not, I will keep it because I love that it is a cancelled library book and it has been checked out so many times.

I can't say I enjoyed this. I gave up half way through but did got back to finish it. I found Sophia to be an annoying, selfish little brat. I did wonder if it was the translation but the fact I know people who have really enjoyed this, I'm not sure.
