1939 William Morrow hardcover, with dust jacket, of the Book-of-the-Month Club Selection. Also known by the title What Happened to the Corbetts. This was on my list of best past novels to read when I bought this copy today for 25 cents from the sale shelf of Dimond Library.

I can let this go after I read:
1961 Stephen Morris (posth., from 1923) [n/a]
1961 Pilotage (posth., from 1924) [n/a]
1926 Marazan [n/a]
1928 So Disdained [n/a]
1932 Lonely Road [n/a]
1938 Ruined City (Kindling) [read 2013]

Edit December 31, 2013: This was a really fascinating look at a slice of time in the past, on the very brink of what was feared to be a war of total destruction. In retrospect, things turned out bad for England, but their defenses proved more effective, even though the weapons they faced turned out to be more fearsome. There were privations, but the societal structure held together. So this one loses a bit of points just by being dated. Whereas it would have been an absolute must-read in 1939. Although I kind of snickered at the continuous travail of trying to find milk for baby. Good grief, English primness I guess, in that they could not use what nature gave this young mother to feed her baby. Not even a mention of her being dry, so I think it was just not *proper* at the time, for the author to even give it a mention. I currently have this one ranked at #101 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
