Received in the mail from Betsy-STL, as winner of a guessing game. Thank you so much! I look forward to reading and will post more after I have!
Just finished this book while watching the Chiefs vs. Bengals game...
Anyway, it was a challenging but interesting read for me. The event underlying the whole story is the appearance of a mysterious space body which is labeled an Excession. Around this, there are many agendas going on, all seemingly aimed at gaining control of, or trying to understand the Excession. This is book is very fictionally technical (if that makes any sense) and it was kind of hard for me to grasp at first, but after getting used to it, the personalities of the ship minds were humorous in many cases. The Excession itself does make a statement at the end of the book, which was good, since up until that point, I just really felt like it I was being cheated out of the end to the mystery. But you do learn what it is, on the very last page!
I would recommend this to those who like space novels, and who are willing to stick out what might seem at first to be a boring or ponderous book. It is complex with a lot of story lines that don't seem to fit together at first. They do come together in the end though. I think I would eventually like to read others of Iain Banks Culture novels, just to see how it fills out my idea of the Culture.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to read this one Betsy-STL!
I think my SO would like to read it, so I will label it as available for trade, pending his finishing of it!
