Dear reader, dear finder - thank you for coming this far to see where this book has been. Do feel free to leave a journal entry below saying where you found it, what you thought of it, and what you intend to do with it.

Knowing - and liking - Sarah Waters' previous books I was expecting another historical lesbian romance, which this wasn't. It's been years since I read a really good ghost story, which this was. An interesting look at class, post-war, which raised some issues that I'm prodding at myself - may write more about this later. Not convinced by the title, which I remember from The Bagthorpe Saga as a euphemism for 'You're going to have a new little brother or sister, darling'.

Wow. Like elstaplador I associate Sarah Waters with historical lesbian romance, so this was a bit of surprise. Very atmospheric and creepy, I found myself getting quite unsettled in parts. The prose style reminded me of Ishguro's "When We Were Orphans" - the stilted, detached descriptions and ever-so-English manners. By the end I was left wondering what the "truth" was behind the events.

I will pass this book on... Haven't decided when or how, but I will.
