Denne boka ble registrert som en reisende bok av Askeladda. "Så lenge det fremdeles finnes bøker jeg ikke har lest, er livet verdt å leve", fritt sitert etter Göran Tunstrøm.

Rushdie Went to
Nicaragua in 1986, not knowing what to expect. What he discovered was overwhelmijg: a culture of masks with bullet holes in their foreheads, and of heroes who turned into covered markets. He was haunted by ghosts, engulfed by poets, lectured on Tagore. He saw a computer that had been murdered by the Contra, and ran across an imaginary dog that could eat real books.

The jaguar smile is about power, powerlessness, beauty, blood, death. It's about the Nicaragua behind the headlines, about the fixing of beauty contests, and about a pair of disembodied, bloody jaws from which Rushdie, in a nightmare, had to run for his life.

Ecellent! I really enjoyed to read Rushide's story from his journey in Nicaragua, in times of change! He is a great story teller, and it's interesting to read about his meetings with Daniel Ortega and his men, and their thinking while building a new democraty. and the building of a new national identity. His meetings with the local people, farmers-campesinos, his reflections of the role of the church, Violetta Camorra. Nicaragua has border lines both to the Pasific and to the Atlantic ocean - and the people and culture differs from coast to coast.

A richness of storys an persons in this little book. I became interested in learing to know more about the country.

One little story I will remeber, is the story of the Rama language. There were only 23 olderly people alive, talking the language, so a french lingvist came to live with them for months, for documenting the language. But there was a problem. Most ofThe Rama olders had lost their teeth, so they couldn't pronounce the words properly. Dental costs could blow away a dying language!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

RABCK - controlled release. Sendt to PaulAnni as part of the international Wishlist tag game I. She has wished to read books for all contries in the world, and havent read a book for Nicaragua.

The book is the origianl 1986 book, given to bookcrossing by my father. Unfortunately the gluing of the sides have dried a bit during the years, at during my reading, some sides fell out. I have tried to tape it the best I can, - and in a way I feel taking care of the book like this, only makes it more valuable.

I wih you lots of good readnings!

The book has arrived in Finland, thank you Askeladda!
Indeed, I haven't read anything about Nicaragua, nor have I read any of Rushdie's books, so I am very much looking forward to reading this.

I received the book three years ago, but it is only now that I get to it - and for a good reason: there is another BC member interested in it.

This wasn't a particularly quick read for me - so many names of politicians and poets! I must admit that I wasn't very aware of the Nicaraguan revolution when I started the book, but it had me searching Internet and learning a lot. It was interesting to read Salman Rushdie's observations of the revolution and how people were coping in the country 7 years after it.

All in all - not quite my usual reading matter, but I am pleased that I had a chance to read it.

I don't have much to say about this book. It was defenitely my cup of tea - had difficulties to follow the red line of it.
