1987 paperback of the 1968 spy thriller. I bought this copy today for 10 cents from the sale shelf of Dimond Library.
I can let this go after I read:
1961 Call for the Dead [read 2009]
1962 A Murder of Quality [read 2010]
1963 The Spy Who Came In From the Cold [read 2010]
1965 Bread on the Waters (short story in Playboy) [read 2011]
Edit May 24, 2011: This ended in an interesting way, but it took forever to get there. And it seems that le Carre's characters often tend to whine like adolescents, so that it makes me wonder why the spy agencies don't hire adults to do such important dangerous work. I don't quite get his style, plus he tends to write a bit murky anwyay.
