Got this on my trip out west because I like the Indian captive stories. I got it out of the children's/teen section, but so far I don't see it as a child's book.
Teenager Miriam Willard and her sister's family become prisoners during the French and Indian War. They are first taken captive by the Indians, but are later sold to the French. The book was interesting in that their situation was constanting changing....living at first with Indians out in the forest, then as servants of the French, and next guests of the French only to become prisoners AGAIN of the French. (Don't mean to sound confusing there!)
Actually, the author does a good job of showing the up/down feelings a person might feel in this situation, especially if you are a young teen.
My only complaint is that the author ended the story without totally tieing up the loose ends....you only discover that their plans for freedom come to fruition by reading the epilouge. (For heaven't sake, you keep me reading all that time to not let me discover the "real" outcome? Very frustrating!!)
