Before Alvin can become an apprentice he has an adventure with the Reds.
Still a compelling series.

At the age of eleven, Lolla-Wossicky saw the white men murder his father. His brother, Ta-Kumsaw, wishes to see whites confined to the eastern lands. But Governor Bill Harrison of the rough frontier town of Carthage has far more brutal plans for the Indians.

When he puts those plans into action, he unwittingly brings young Alvin - the seventh son of a seventh son with extraordinary powers - to Lolla-Wossicky and Ta-Kumsaw. And this will take Alvin one more step on his magical odyssey.

I spent the first two-thirds of this book wondering when they were going to get back to Alvin's story. After all, it's called....oh wait, that's right. Never mind. A bit of confusion until you realize that the books aren't all sequential.

Favorite Scene: tie between the curse of Tippy-Canoe and Eight-Face Mound
Favorite Quote: None, actually. A big suprise, if you look at my entry for the first book.

The Series So Far:
Alvin Maker 1: Seventh Son
Alvin Maker 2: Red Prophet
Alvin Maker 3: Prentice Alvin
Alvin Maker 4: Alvin Journeyman
Alvin Maker 5: Heartfire
Alvin Maker 6: The Crystal City (not available in paperback yet)

I stole this book from my wife, AngelKitty, and read it about a year ago. I passed it back to her when I was done with it. Shortly thereafter, she emailed me the BCID, and told me to journal. I was cleaning out that account's inbox when I saw the message -- so I'm journalling the book after all this time.

I think I might have prefered this one to the first book in the series -- the life and times of Lolla-Wossicky are more interesting to me than the charmed childhood of Alvin. In addition, since I wasn't as up on my American History as I should have been, I didn't recognize Harrison until the end of the book -- which reinforced the depth of Card's world and its interweaving with our own.
