Heartfire: Alvin Maker Book 5

Peggy is a Torch, able to see the fire burning in each person's heart.
Alvin is a Maker.
Their destinies seem tied together, but in this book Alvin has gone north, where his powers are considered witchcraft, and Peggy has been drawn south, for she has seen a terrible future of war and destruction.
By this book the series seems too long: does the author know where he is taking it?
Still enjoyable; I've never known Card write a book that wasn't worth the read, but definitely dragging the series out a bit.

This one is heading for AngelKitty.
Peggy is a Torch, able to see the fire burning in each person's heart. From the moment of Alvin Maker's birth, when the Unmaker first strove to kill him, she has protected him. But Alvin's destiny has taken them on separate journeys. Alvin has gone north, where his powers are considered witchcraft, and their use is punished with death. Peggy has been drawn south, for she has seen a terrible future of war and destruction. One slender path exists that leads through the bloodshed, and it is Peggy's quest to set the world on that path to peace.
Well, once again Card has managed to write an ending that isn't quite. The story has again become a little less about Alvin and Peggy and a little more about those they travel with. And we get the chance to find out Taleswapper's knack. And of course, we get to meet Verily and Purity. Can't wait for Crystal City to come out so we can find out more about them...
Favorite Scene: The verdict of the witchcraft trial
Favorite Quote 1: He wan't a lover of freedom who had neglected to free his slaves; he was a man who loved to control other people, and did it by talking about freedom.
Favorite Quote 2: "Hey, I may be a bastard, but I'm not their bastard." (Arthur Stuart, of course)
Favorite Quote 3: (highlight to read, since it's a moderate spoiler) The defendant's presence not being necessary at this hearing, and with proof positive that the defendant's compliance with his imprisonment was entirely voluntary, the court deems him worthy of our trust. [Alvin is] released on his own recognizance
The Series So Far:
Alvin Maker 1: Seventh Son
Alvin Maker 2: Red Prophet
Alvin Maker 3: Prentice Alvin
Alvin Maker 4: Alvin Journeyman
Alvin Maker 5: Heartfire
Alvin Maker 6: The Crystal City (not available in paperback yet)

I stole this book from my wife, AngelKitty, and read it about a year ago. I passed it back to her when I was done with it. Shortly thereafter, she emailed me the BCID, and told me to journal. I was cleaning out that account's inbox when I saw the message -- so I'm journalling the book after all this time.
I didn't find this book as good as the previous, since it focuses much more on the exploits of Alvin's evil little brother. Back to the less-deep villians, but that might be because the Unmaker is riding him rather than the basic forces of greed and jealousy.
Still, better than many books I've read in the past. Well worth reading as a cap to the series.
(Now that Crystal City is coming, though, I guess it's a way to figure out what's going to happen in the last book!)
