Journal Entry 3 by Coralpm at Bath, Somerset United Kingdom on Monday, October 24, 2011
I found this book thoroughly enjoyable, although even to the end I was a little confused as to why the author had written each chapter as it's own stand-alone story. Things were explained that didn't need to be sometimes, as if one was reading that chapter independently. After getting used to this though, I really began to warm to Larry, the protagonist, and I felt awfully sad when the book had ended, as I so enjoyed reading about him. The book itself is like a maze, and the ending is the reward you would usually find in the centre. Carol Shields really understands characterisation well, and many of the characters will stay with me for a long time.
I was surprised to find the book crossing label in this book as I actually bought it from a seller on Amazon, which I thought was a bit cheeky. It was on my reading list for a creative writing university module that I'm currently doing. I plan to leave it somewhere in Bath - perhaps at the maze near Pulteney Bridge and follow its progress. Let's hope it doesn't find its way into a book sellers hands again!!
