A Carte de Guia de Casados foi escrita na Torre Velha, em 1650, onde D. Francisco Manuel de Melo - homem solteiro - cumpria pena de prisão. Não só o tema da obra, tão claramente contido no próprio título, com o estilo vivo e pitoresco com que o autor o aborda justificam o grato acolhimento que o público sempre lhe dispensou.
