I love this author's writing style. He so wonderfully gets into the feel and language of the time and place that his books are set in. This is a novel but contains so many facts about people, events and London in the mid 19th century. It is especially rich in stories of the music hall scene of that period. It does have some gruesome passages, reminiscent of Jack the Ripper and not to be read while eating or wandering around alone at night!
Enough said I don't want to spoil it for others.

On its way via La Poste to another Ackroyd fan, Nu-Knees, with whom I'm trading Ackroyd books! Maybe I can find some more at the Phoenix sale on Saturday.

Thank you very much, bluenoser. Peter Ackroyd's definitely become a new favourite author in the past couple of months. I see the Daily Mail thinks this is: 'Mesmerising, macabre and totally brilliant' :-)

Journal Entry 5 by wingNu-Kneeswing from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Thursday, June 18, 2009
Melodrama at its most melodramatic as a gruesome murderer stalks the streets of Victorian London. All human life is here! The story takes us from courtroom to music hall and beyond .... Great fun!

Thanks again, bluenoser!

On its way to MrsDanvers in the hands of the Royal Mail, second class so it'll probably arrive in the middle of next week. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 7 by MrsDanvers from Aldeburgh, Suffolk United Kingdom on Thursday, June 25, 2009
The Mail got through and this arrived yesterday.
Thank you so much for passing this on. I love Peter Ackroyd and coincidentally had picked up The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein his latest novel, from the library last week.

Journal Entry 8 by MrsDanvers at Ely, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Thursday, June 17, 2010
Sorry everyone, I should have written this journal last year when I read the book.

An excellent story combining crime, historical detail, Victorian social studies, the famous and the ficticious. Only Ackroyd could combine his depth of knowledge of London, the place and its people with a fictional crime to produce such an entertaining novel.
