I was having trouble understanding why a family I know wasn't attempting to change their living conditions. After reading this book, I am much less judgmental, and more understanding. Jeannette Walls' story is the best example I know of a child's unconditional love for his/her parents. It also should be a message of hope for those who want to make a change despite great odds.

A heart-rending and Heart warming story all in one small but wonderful packeage!

I was attending the EAA AirVenture Trade show in Oshkosh,WI, from Florida, as support staff for my husband's company. While tidying up the home we were renting for the week I found this book with a note from a friend (?) of the homeowner telling him that he "might find it interesting and that after the first 2 pages he would be hooked". Well, the friend was right. Every spare minute (there weren't many, so I created some) was spent trying to get through this book in the 4 days I had left in town. This book was definitely a look into a world of which I have no knowledge. The author took a hard to swallow topic and by making it so VERY personal, allowed me to pursue and persever for the sake of the person (herself). I will recommend it.

I received this book as part of book exchange for parents at my children's school. A great read that I will pass on to my sister to read next.

I couldn't put this book down. It helped me better understand people who live in extreme poverty, and the importance of family relationships.

It is sad and amazing to know people lived like this when I was growing up! It was well written and an easy read. With all the money donated and all the hours people donate to help the less privaliged, it seems unbelievable there are people out there that would allow their children to starve rather than taking a donation. It was a thought provoking book!
