From Amazon.com:

Elizabeth Peters's unforgettable heroine Amelia Peabody makes her first appearance in this clever mystery. Amelia receives a rather large inheritance and decides to use it for travel. On her way through Rome to Egypt, she meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young woman abandoned by her lover and left with no means of support. Amelia promptly takes Evelyn under her wing, insisting that the young lady accompany her to Egypt, where Amelia plans to indulge her passion for Egyptology. When Evelyn becomes the target of an aborted kidnapping and the focus of a series of suspicious accidents and mysterious visitations, Amelia becomes convinced of a plot to harm her young friend. Like any self-respecting sleuth, Amelia sets out to discover who is behind it all.

I've been keen to read the Amelia Peabody series for some time, and luckily I found this copy recently. It didn't disappoint!

I was aware of its popular classification as a "cozy" mystery, and I'm glad I was, since I was prepared for what I got from this. It wasn't too violent, not too taxing on the mind, a little predictable, with fun characters and some romance thrown into the mix. It was an easy read, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

I will caution anyone who gets this not to read the blurb on the back - especially the Publishers Weekly comment near the bottom, since that will tip something that happens late in the book. That was very poor show to put this on the book!

Here's a list of the entire Amelia Peabody series, in reverse chronological order, from the ameliapeabody.com website.
