Maugham's 1915 novel about Philip Carey who suffers from a clubfoot. His mother dies when he's very young. He grows up to be a doctor and becomes entangled by the selfish and kind of sluttish young waitress, Mildred.

This novel was made into a successful 1934 movie starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis. The latter stole the show by her fearlessness as an actress to play such a thoroughly unsympathetic character.
