Received yesterday. Thanks--it looks good. I haven't heard about this one.
I thought this was a wonderful book. Very realistic, strong characterizations. I felt very connected to Sara Louise, wanting to leave the island and not realizing it was her own fears and indecision that were forcing her to stay. You have to know what you want, so when it comes along you can take it.
Will send it along to tuff517 in a bit. Thanks for sharing this book.

Sent Saturday, September 23, to tuff517, vis media mail.
Received this last week, starting ASAP.
i must have forgotten to post a message when i got this. i sat down and finished reading this today after having dragged my feet through most of the book. the island fishing community setting is very vivid and the emotions of the perpetually slighted sister were oftentimes believable, but when she started having overemotional outbursts i found it much harder to sympathize. the last fourth of the book is where some real development could've happened, but the growing up and the becoming her own person ending was far too rushed. all in all i felt this was a book, like -a ring of endless light-, whose good points are far outweighed by their bad, although i suppose people who can relate to the situation more will enjoy it.
will be sending on in the next day or so. thanks.

This book has made it safely to Memphis, TN. Looking forward to reading it.
I have to say I enjoyed reading this book but I thought the story was odd. Loved the setting and as others have said, the descriptions of the island and fishing community were very vivid. I thought the relationship between the sisters was very well-written and I could understand where each of them was coming from (although my sister and I never had that kind of resentment!). The parents definitely played into it by favoring Caroline. What bothered me the most about this story was the grandmother - was she going senile or was just mean-spirited? She didn't seem to love Sara Louise or her daughter-in-law. Why did the father allow his mother to treat them that way? A lot of insensitivity in this family! Also, I didn't care for the author's "wrap-up" in the last couple of chapters - seemed like she felt the need for a happy-ish ending when at best it was bittersweet.
After all this, I'm still glad I read it - thanks for sharing. Will send to yokaye after I finish King of the Wind
Update 2/21 - mailed out today.

Rec'd safe and sound :) I actually own this one, and with the pile of bookring books that has come in this month, I think I'll just hold this one until I'm done with King of the Wind and send it along. When I get caught up I'll reread my copy and add my review...from what I remember it's not my favorite by Paterson, but a good read.
Arrived home safely!
